God is not a "power of positive thinking" God. He doesn't fit Himself into our agenda: The only agenda He has is His own. We're free to take it or leave it, but He's the only one who can see the whole picture, so making sure everything is neat, comfortable, and without ripples for us is not usually at the top of His "to do" list.
Life, Jesus said in John 17 -- life itself -- is to know Him and to know His Father, who sent Him. As we begin to really know the living God, having all our dreams come true actually starts to become secondary. It can even lose its charm, compared to the joy of being part helping make His dreams come true -- seeing His plans worked out in the lives of people He touches through us, and in our own lives, as we live in complete surrender and obedience to Him.
For several years, in a long-term crisis, I ran over and over to God to rescue me. I couldn't figure out why He didn't just help me find a solution to my problem. There were many times when it even seemed that He was pulling solutions out from under me. Maybe He was. Because the first thing on His agenda for me was to heal our relationship. He also knew I would keep my life in "make do" mode until He brought me to my knees.
Then one night I did fall on my knees, terrified because my world was falling apart, but also furious with Him. I said some things to Him that I wouldn't recommend incorporating into your prayer life. Yet He met me in that moment. He let me know in no uncertain terms that He was real, that He was right there for me, and that He treasured me. Over the next several months, He began to deeply nurture and heal me. He let the world keep raging around me, but He taught me to cling to Him in the midst of it.
Life happens. Positive thinking can't cure that; it has no power of its own. To live surrendered to the Lord God's agenda, in His fellowship, in His care, in His arms -- now that's powerful.
